What is a Doula?
The word "doula" comes from an ancient Greek word. Today the word has come to refer to "a woman experienced in child birth who provides continuous physical emotional and informal support to the mother before during and just after childbirth"
(Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus (Mothering the new Mother)
As a Birth Doula I provide support to the mother as well as the partner. I do not replace anyone the mother wants there I just add support. I am also a 3rd party so I do not have the same emotional connection that a family member would have. I am hired by the family. Therefore I am not employed by where you choose to deliver. I go where you go.
There are three types of support I can provide during the birth invisible, minimum support, and main support. Studies have shown that just having a doula in the room who did nothing, but sit quietly there and think positive thoughts that the mother viewed the birth with a more positive outcome. The level of support you need would be decided by the needs of the mother.
I also teach the expectant family different techniques they can use during the birth as well as after. I am a resource for the family. I draw on all my education and experience to better serve the family. From relaxation technique, aroma therapy including essential oils (I only use Young living essential oils) to Healing Touch. I view birth as a natural part of life.
As Postpartum Doula I provide support to the new family. I can do light house work, quick runs to the store, watch older children, watch newborn while mother takes a shower or even a much needed nap. I have even been know to provide nighttime support so the parents can rest.
If you have any other questions about what a Doula is or dose please feel free to message me.
